Der Feuerreiter


Sehet ihr am Fensterlein
Don't you see - there at the little window -
Dort die rote Mütze wieder?
the red cap again?
Nicht geheuer muß es sein,
There must be something weird afoot,
Denn er geht schon auf und nieder.
for he's pacing up and down.
Und auf einmal welch Gewühle
And suddenly what thronging crowds
Bei der Brücke nach dem Feld!
by the bridge, off down to the meadow!
Horch! das Feuerglöcklein gellt:
Hark! the fire-bell is shrilling:
Hinterm Berg,
behind the hill,
Hinterm Berg
behind the hill,
Brennt es in der Mühle!
the mill's on fire!

Schaut, da sprengt er wütend schier
Look! There he comes at a frantic gallop
Durch das Tor, der Feuerreiter,
sheer through the gate, the firerider,
Auf dem rippendürren Tier,
on his skinny-ribbed mount,
Als auf einer Feuerleiter!
as if on a fire-ladder.
Querfeldein, durch Qualm und Schwüle,
Cross-country! Through thick smoke and heat-haze
Rennt er schon und ist am Ort!
he races, and arrives!
Drüben scallt es fort und fort:
In the distance the bell peals on and on -
Hinterm Berg,

Brennt es in der Mühle!
the mill's on fire!

Der so oft den roten Hahn
You who had so often fire
Meilenweit von fern gerochen,
scented from miles away,
Mit des heil'gen Kreuzes Span
and with a splinter of the True Cross
Freventlich die Glut besprochen -
blasphemously conjured the blaze -
Weh! dir grinst vom Dachgestühle
look out! - from the rafters is grinning
Dort der Feind im Höllenschein.
the Devil at you amid the flames of hell.
Gnade Gott der Seele dein!
God have mercy on your soul!
Hinterm Berg,
behind the hill,
Hinterm Berg,

Rast er in der Mühle!
He burns in the mill!

Keine Stunde hielt es an,
It took less than an hour
Bis die Mühle borst in Trümmer;
for the mill to burst in ruins.
Doch den kecken Reitersmann
But the rash rider
Sah man von der Stunde nimmer.
was never again seen from that hour.
Volk und Wagen im Gewühle
People and carriages in a throng
Kehren heim von all dem Graus;
return home out of all that horror.
Auch das Glöcklein klinget aus:
The bell too rings itself out -
Hinterm Berg,
behind the hill,

Brennt's! -
It's burning!

Nach der Zeit ein Müller fand
Some time later the miller found
Ein Gerippe samt der Mützen
a skeleton with a cap on
Aufrecht an der Kellerwand
seated bolt upright against the cellar wal
Auf der beinern Mähre sitzen:
on the bones of a mare.
Feuerreiter, wie so kühle
Fire-rider, how coolly
Reitest du in deinem Grab!
you ride in your grave!
Husch! da fällt's in Asche ab.
Hush! It's all flaking away in ash.
Ruhe wohl,
Rest in peace,
Ruhe wohl
Rest in peace,
Drunten in der Mühle!
